What you need to know about the rail tour to Morretes

What you need to know about the rail tour to Morretes

The rail tour to Morretes is the most famous and the most booked tour in Curitiba. If you are planing a trip to Curitiba, this one should be on your must-do-list – and if possible, booked before you arrive here! Get information and tips here to make the best choice and have a great experience during the tour.

How does the rail tour to Morretes work?

Most important things first! The train has one departure time to Morretes and one back to Curitiba. It leaves from Curitiba at 8:30 am (the deluxe train at 9:30 am in some dates – you will read about the difference later) and it leaves from „Rodoferroviária“ in Curitiba (bus and train station are in the same place). The departure place is central and has easy access by bus, cab or even walking from some hotels. The journey takes about 4 hours and 15 minutes, but there might be delays or stops in the middle of the journey. The tourist train shares the railway with cargo trains, and cargo has priority. Delays can not be predicted, but do not let them ruin your trip – just be advised that they might occurr.

Important!! The train will NOT have daily departures during low and mid-season. >> See the tour calendar here. <<

Many people still referr to the rail tour as to Paranaguá. It was so in former times, but since some years, the rail tour ends in Morretes. Unfortunately the rail station in Paranaguá is in very bad shape. But we swear you will not miss any beautiful landscapes, because the most beautiful parks of the railway end in Morretes anyway!

Morretes is a nice and picturesque little town. You will find handcraft stores with local goods, beautiful old houses, historical buildings, the beautiful Nhundiaquara river and restaurants with the regional food „barreado“ – a beef stew served with cassava flour, rice, bananas, fish, praws and side dishes. Try the famous „bala de banana“ – banana candy – and the „cachaças” – sugar cane spirit.

The train departs back to Curitiba from the local rail station – central and easy to find – at 3 pm. The journey takes about 4 hours and 15 minutes and the landscapes are the same as on the way there. That´s why most people prefer to book a tour package with return by van instead of the return tickets.

An important tip: it might be tiring (or boring!) to go and return by train. The landscape is the same and you will be more than 8 hours inside the train. It is usually better to go or return by van or by bus. We will show you below some options you have so that you can compare and book the best one for you. Package tours usually include one way or another along the Graciosa Road or the BR-277, depending on the climate. Both have beautiful landscapes of the Serra do Mar mountain range.

Pay attention to the pick up times. If your tour includes pick up service, please be at the lobby on time to avoid delays to the group. If you will go straight to the rail station, plan time ahead because of the traffic and to avoid problems.

Dutch Settlements: a great tour close to Curitiba

Dutch Settlements: a great tour close to Curitiba

The settlement Castrolanda is located in Castro, in Paraná Estate. Its original area was 5,000 hectars and was the new home for Dutch immigrants that left Europe after the World War II. They arrived 1951 and were astonished about the size of the fields, totally different of what they had in Holland. Uniting the names Castro and Holland, the settlement started and the cooperative Castrolanda was founded.

memorial-castrolanda With the arrival of the Dutch families, agricultural infrastructure was brought. Exhibition at the Immigration Memorial.

But not everything was easy at the beginning. The pioneers had much work here and had to adapt to Brasil, with unknown cattle deseases and lack of technical assistance. But as they were allowed to bring their own equipment, they could establish a very successful dairy industry and developed quickly.

Milk Capital City

At present days, Castrolanda cooperative is dedicated to expand business and achieve more space among the greatest cooperatives in Brazil. Their development is remarkable! Castro is known as the Milk Capital City due to the high productivity and quality reached here. Every year the event Agroleite is held here and presents exhibitions and new techniques to improve the milk production. It is the most complete event in the area in Brazil and a great opportunity for networking. 2016 the event will happen from 18th to 22nd October.

► Entrance of “Cidade do Leite” – Milk City.
agroleite-castrolanda2Agroleite is one of the most important events of this area.

The cooperative built 1991 the Immigrant Museum that shows the history of the pioneer families who arrived here. The museum is located in an old house in European style. The furniture and objects were donated by the local families. A new museum is being built to have more space for exhibition. We will tell more when it is ready!

De Immigrant: one of the greatest windmills outside the Netherlands

In Castrolanda you will visit the windmill De Immigrant – the immigrant – inspired by the Woldzigt, located in Dentre, the hometown of many of the immigrants. The wings of the windmill are 26m long and its height is 35m. The windmill itself is a great attraction and inside you will visit the Dutch Immigration Memorial, in honor to the people who arrived here in the 1950´s. The museum is simply known as “windmill”  and was opened 2001, when the settlement completeted its 50 first years of existence. The windmills are the symbol for Holland and also for the cooperative.

► Windmill De Immigrant in Castrolanda – it is also the Dutch Immigration Memorial.

Inside the memorial, a trip back in former times. Visitors can walk up 4 floors and have the chance to know more about the immigration, the history of the settlement and of the cooperative and enjoy the local built – curiosly, it is completely made of wood, without nails! The memorial has also a library and a typical Dutch pub. There is a souvenir shop! The Memorial is open from Friday to Sunday from 2pm to 6pm. Other days are subject to confirmation for groups of minimum 10 persons. For lunch or a coffee, you can make a stop in the local restaurant – Café de Molen, a rustic place that serves regular meals, nothing fancy.

Biggest history open air museum in Brazil

When you arrive in Carambeí, you will have some more history about the Dutch immigration. Here, everything looks very real! You will visit the biggest history open air museum in Brazil spread over 100,000 sqm. In the middle of beautiful gardens you will find constructions like the ones from 1930´s to 1950´s. Visitors can imagine vividly how things where in the past. The memorial was created to preserve the memory of the pioneers, that left many benefits for the local community.

► Right at the entrance you will cross a bridge brought from Holland!

The bulding from 1946 hosted the first part of the museum and is named “Casa da Memória” –  opened 2001. In 2011 the new part was ready: the historical village, true reproduction of the former houses in a 60% escale. Houses, train station, school, dairy industry, slaughter house, church and even the cemetery can be visited. All houses have objects from the past and remind the first years of the settlement. The “Parque das Águas” is the newest part of the museum and was opened 2015. It was inspired by the Zaanse Schanans, an environmental park in Holland.

Curiosity! Carambeí was the home of the first cooperative in Brazil, presently known as Batavo!

Witmarsum Settlement: a menonite experience close to Curitiba

Witmarsum Settlement: a menonite experience close to Curitiba

Paraná Estate is a melting pot of many different cultures. Close to Curitiba there is the Colônia Witmarsum, located 65 km from Curitiba. In a short trip you can now more about the menonites who came to Brazil and have a countryside experience.

The Colônia Witmarsum was founded by menonites who came from the town Witmarsum in Santa Catarina. Originated in Frisia – today a part of Holland and Germany – the menonites arrived in Santa Catarina in 1930 and a group of them came to Paraná Estate 1951. They searched for more land to establish with their families and bought the Cancela farm in Palmeira. The Colônia Witmarsum was founded as a place to work and live according to their religion and habits. With much dedication and effort, the settlement is now reference in the milk and cheese production and other agricultural products and is a pleasant destination for a tour.

museu-de-história-witmarsumColônia Witmarsum has about 2,000 inhabitants, 1,200 of them are menonites. They keep alive their traditons and the German language and cuisine. You will be delighted with the beautiful landscapes and enjoy the country atmosphere. A very nice and rather unknown tour that will make your trip more interesting!

→ Book a tour that unites the beutiful rock formations of Vila Velha with Witmarsum!

To know more about the history of the settlment and about the menonites, the Heimat Museum is a mandatory stop. The place was the former main house of the farm Cancela and has a collection of dear objects of the pioneers.

colônia-witmarsum-museu-acervo-2colônia-witmarsum-museu-acervocolônia-witmarsum-museu-acervo-3A trip back in time! The museum opens weekends and holidays from 2pm to 5pm. For visits during the week, it is necessary to book ahead. The entrance fee costs R$ 5,00. The local history teacher Egon Phillipsen works at the museum and will tell more details about the menonites and the settlement. Our tours include always a tour guide that will make the tour more informative and attractive to you. More information and bookings here!

Right beside the museum there is a tourist information office, where you can also buy some local products. The place is very charming!

centro-de-informações-turísticas-witmarsumFor lunch, enjoy the local German cuisine. At Bela Vista you will try delicious and traditional food as spätze (a kind of pasta), sauerkraut, kassler, sausages and much more! Do not miss the blackberry juice and apple strudel.

almoço-em-witmarsumrestaurante-em-witmarsumFor an afternoon coffee, Café Kliewer is a good choice! There is an option where everything is included (café colonial) or you can also order individually pies, sandwiches, cookies and much more. A good infrastructure for kids, with playground. A nice and rustic place to end the tour.

There are also some stores with local products to take home. Local visitors love to buy the fine cheese produced there. The cheese production began 1999 with the help of a Swiss cheese specialist and made Witmarsum famous in the region. Delicious cheese sorts as asiago, camembert, brie, emmental, raclette, among others…

You will find the shop Toll right in front of Café Kliewer. It sells cute things from Germany, such as the famous “Räuchermännchen”. You will also find here Kuckkuck clocks, decoration articles and local products.

loja-artesanato-witmarsumartesanato-alemão-witmarsumWitmarsum has now its own craft beer, the Usinamalte. You will find it in several restaurants and cafés. It is worth to try it!

usinamalte-witmarsum-cervejariaAnother nice suggestion is to make a tractor tour at Tracktur. They take between 10 and 25 minutes inside of a local farm. A fun experience for the whole family! It is also possible to ride a poney at Ponyland on Saturdays and Sundays.

Passeio-de-Tracktur-witmarsumWirtmarsum is a very and different destination just 65 km away from Curitiba. A pleasant and quiet place. Do not expect a village with a central square. The farms are a bit away from each other because it was a former farm that was divided among the first settlers and each one developed different activities as time went by. Today many locals are dedicated to tourism and the number of visitors increase every year, especially during weekends.

Curiosities about the menonites and about Witmarsum

  • The menonites did not come directly from Germany – before that they had moved to Russia, but they kept their German traditons. They ran away from Russia 1929 because they would be forced to entry the army, what is against their faith.
  • Boqueirão, a neighborhood in Curitiba, also welcomed many menonites and the milk production was important there as well. They delivered milk to Curitiba´s homes and shops in the past.
  • Most inhabitants of Witmarsum speak German fluently and the local public school teaches German too
  • Witmarsum Cooperative produces fine cheese and high quality milk. The productors are located close to the industry unity, what guarantees more quality to the final product. The location at 1,000 m above sea level, the climate and pastures are importante for the cattle well-being.

  • According to the menonite pastor Fridbert August, the menonites are anabaptists. They were part of the Luther reform that gave access to the Bible to all christians, defended the separation between Government and Church and also the batism was made at adult age. In present days, the menonites are known for looking steadly to follow what Jesus said, for their peace principles and for their community lives. Colônia Witmarsum is a great example of that.
  • Amish is a conservative Christian group that lives in the USA and Canada. They are “cousins” to the menonites. Menonites are more progressive and less rigorous. The Amish, by instance, do not allow the use of technology, as automobiles and phones.

Run away from tourist traps and plan your trip ahead

Even if you are an experienced traveller, you can always get tempted and book a tourist trap. Few people speak foreign languages in Brazil and Portuguese is not widely spoken worldwide. It might get difficult for you to understand or be understood. Just imagine that you want a flawless trip, but has communication issues? Many things can go wrong if you do not understand properly the other person. You will spend much time planing and can still have problems by arrival. Plan ahead and enjoy the city at most. Some tours are easily fully booked. Others do not leave daily. Some days of the week only few restaurants open and many other details that will be easier handled if you have professionals to assist you. I know that because I work on incoming business in Curitiba since 2007 and know what is necessary to have a memorable trip in Curitiba.

✓ Just imagine your nice tours in Curitiba without any worry, language barriers, well organized and enjoying everything with your loved one!

Plan ahead and have most of the trip. Many couples prefer to decide about tours when they arrive here, but at the end, they do not visit many places. Walk in a shopping mall or strolling withour a certain destination do not enhance much your trip in Curitiba. Some prefer to ask at the hotel front desk, where normally you will get only the most booked tours from the companies that tip the hotel staff more. In most cases, the service quality or the experience you get do not matter much. At the front desk, from one day to the other, you will not have many options. The motto is “take it or leave it”! This is a real shame, because there are so many nice things to see and visit if you plan ahead. You will have personal services, will not gamble with your tour and will have the best guides. The best professionals are always the more requested ones. In the tourism business, it is exactly the same. Do not gamble when you think about a good trip as a couple!

How did I become specialist for Curitiba and why do I offer such good services to my clientes?

By Bibiana Antoniacomi, owner of Special Paraná

Since a kid I was very curious and wanted to travel and get to know other cultures and different places. I started early to learn English and Spanish. I went after a Rotary Exchange Program year – that was the only exchange program my parentes could affod – it costed basically the airfare. So, when I was 18, in 1993, I was packed for my first big adventure: to stay 10 months in Caracas, to attend a local school and live with a family I had never met before.

Back to Curitiba, I studied Tourism at UFPR (Universidade Federal do Paraná), worked in an advertising agency, events, hotels and other earning possibilitites with the strong purpose to save money to study English and to accomplish a post-grad program abroad. I had several work and life experiences and a study period in Canada before heading to Barcelona and attend a post-grad program at ESADE, one of the best business schools in Europe. It was an amazing experience that led me to Germany, where I lived almost 8 years. There I worked in deluxe hotels, incoming agency and had my own tour operator with a German partner. Years full of learning!

fotos-bibianaIn a meeting with an excellent tourism professional from Brazil in Berlin, I heard that a good incoming agency in my beloved Curitiba was needed. He missed someone with focus on varied services and good contact to international market. I went home and this thought did not leave my mind. As I intended to return to Brazil, I did not loose any time and put a business plan together. So, on December 31st 2006 I returned to Brazil with my ex-husband, our baby, some savings, 4 luggage pieces, 6 boxes and much work and cultural experience to serve the tourists who travel to Curitiba.

With the strong purpose to have a wonderful team, offer stunishing experiences to the clientes and have a much bigger company than my 1.58m height, I started Special Paraná on February 5th 2007.bibiana-special-parana

Curitiba with Special Paraná

Since 2007 we had thousands of different clients from all over the world. Our focus is to offer excellent services. Despite having more and more clients every year, we treat them as individual human beings, not as mass tourism, as seen in so many places, where there are so many people doing a tour that is impossible to give special attention to each one.

One year after we opened, in 2008, we launched our website www.curitiba-travel.com.br, something pioneer in our region (until today!). The clients could book online tours, hotels and guesthouses, safely with their credit cards.

2011 we were again pioneers and started Segway Tours Curitiba, something very cool and innovative – a total success by the press and critics. Despite all the possible efforts, the tours were not profitable and after 18 months operation, we decided to stop and sell the segways.

2014 was FIFA World Cup in Brazil – we had four games in Curitiba and had the chance to impress thousands of soccer fans from Spain, Australia, Nigeria, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Ecuador, Portugal, Russia, Argel, Mexico – people from 5 continents!

Still in 2014 we started to create e-books about Curitiba. Our clients and people interested in travelling to Curitiba can now get reliable and acurate information before arrival. Always with the clear goal in mind to show the best and make the stay in Curitiba unforgettable.

Are these tours the right ones for me?

► You prefer to book last minute.

Many travellers prefer to book last minute and sometimes they book tourist traps. Plan ahead and know exactly what to expect. You and your beloved one will spare some uncertain moments doing so. You will not loose time in Curitiba searching for activities and will have information in a language you speak. And as mentioned before, the best professionals are usually fully booked. If you book last minute, maybe we will be unable to confirm your tours. Book ahead and guaranteed zero tourist traps!

► You prefer to see how the weather will be like and then decide what to do when you arrive

As born and raised in Curitiba, I can surely say that weather forecast hardly works in Curitiba. The city is 900m above sea level and has mountains between it and the ocean. Frequently we have 4 seasons in one day. It can be cloudy and rainy in the morning and then sunshine by noon.  Prepare yourself with umbrella, jacket and sun protection – be ready for every rain or sun shine in the same day!

► You do not like to book online

Many people are afraid to inform credit card details online or are afraid that the company does not exist and loose money. There are surely many sleazy companies online and it is better to research well before. Look for information about Special Paraná, about me (Bibiana Antoniacomi), read reviews at Tripadvisor and be sure to book a trustable company.

► You like to do all by yourself when visiting somewhere

It is always a possibility, but honestly, comparing different trips I made, the nicest ones had always a tour guide. This person was there to inform me, take care, give good tips. Spare time and money: you will not wait for transport, will not have language barriers, will not get in trouble or will eat in bad places for not knowing better ones. And a good tour guide (like ours!), will have much to tell and you will be sure to really know the place you visit. It is a complete different tour than all by yourself!

✓ Frequently asked questions

The private tours are exclusive for you both and will be by car. Our guide will drive. The program is only for you two and the guide can adjust it according to your preferences. For example, you have already been at Botanical Garden and prefer to visit other place. This kind of adjust is possible in a private tour.

The rail tours are regular – the transportation will be shared with other travellers. A van will pick you up at your hotel to drive you to the train station and back. From the train station on you will have guide assistance. The regular tours are less expensive than the private tours. The tourist train category departs daily, but there is only Portuguese-speaking guide. For English speaking guide, check out the up-grade possibilities: executive and deluxe category. Both are worth! In the regular tour, adjusts can hardly be made.

The tours begin and end at your hotel, if it is located downtown or at surroundings neighborhoods. In case you stay further away, inform us the adress in your booking request and we will check if there are additional costs.

The sooner the better. As most tours are private and the number of guides is limited, if you book last minute, maybe we are unable to confirm your request.

With exception of the regular tour, it is possible to change the departure times of the private tours. See the detailed description for more information and ask any changes in your booking request.

You can book them in the website, send us an e-mail to info@specialparana.com, call us at +55 41 3232 1314 or by whatsapp +55 41 9935 7215.

Visit Curitiba and take home amazing pictures of you!

Visit Curitiba and take home amazing pictures of you!

Travelling can also be a synomim for pictures. The good moments are kept in our memory, but with pictures we have such moments forever! It is so nice to look at pictures after a while and remember details of the trip. Today almost everybody takes pictures with the cell phone or digital cameras.

But not everybody has the “eye” of a good photographer to capture the best angle or the result is not what you expected. Or you are travelling for the first time to that place and don´t know which places are better for pictures. Or you only take pictures of the landscape, of the other people or the famous selfies that do not show the place so well. Or even worse: you put a great effort to make nice pictures of the others, but the other person travelling with you is not a good photographer. The other alternative is to ask strangers to take pictures of you. No matter what, the result hardly is what you expect.

In Curitiba, that might be different.

What about to book a sighseeing tour with professional photo shoot? Your guarantee of great pictures to register this moment of your life. And you will visit the city while the photo shoot – a very nice and complete tour!

Visit Curitiba + Photo Shoot! Invest in your travel experience (and it is not so expensive!). Many studies have proven that happiness is much bigger through experiences than through material things. And it makes sense! Experiences are parto f your identity and personality.

fotógrafo-curitiba-ensaios-profissionaisThe professional photo shoot can be booked according to availability. As we know that it is tiring to pose as a model, the photo shoots take about 2 hours and then the tour goes on. We reccommend to take the pictures downtown, at  old town or Centro Cívico. In these regions there is a great variety of places and backgrounds for amazing pictures. They will have urban style and the photographer has a great eye and takes pictures that look very natural according to your personality!

visit-Curitiba-photo-shootThe photographer is young and has a very good perception of the best angles and backgrounds of the city – you will have very nice pictures to take home! We have tested the service with two couples that had never made a professional photo shoot to know how the experience was:

“It was our first photo shoot and we were very curious to know how it would be, but also very shy. We did not know what to do. We wanted spontaneous pictures, and so the photographer asked us to talk and act naturally, as she was not there. We got more confidente and the pictures were amazing, just like we wanted them to be! I reccommend very much this service for people who want to register special moments with the quality of a professional photographer.” – Janaína and Anderson.

ensaio-fotográfico-curitiba-com-passeio“When I travel I like to take pictures of the moments and experiences of the trip. But when you travel as a couple, most of the pictures are selfies. With this photo shoot, the experience was different: I was impressed as the landscapes and the urban backgrounds were explored. It was the first time we had a photo shoot and the pictures where beyond our expectations. Now we have great pictures with Curitiba as background to keep, print and remember! Pictures that mix us with the city are much better than any selfie we can take.” – Caroline and Diogo.

centro-histórico-curitibaThe professional photo shoot is part of two different tours:

In this 4-hour tour, our guide will pick you up at your hotel or centrally located adress. The photographer will wait at a central point to start the photo shoot. The photo shoot will take 2 hours and after that you will visit other beautiful places of Curitiba. As it is a private tour, you can visit the places you prefer – just talk to the guide. The departure times are 9am and 2pm.

This is a more complete sightseeing tour that starts with the 2-hour photo shoot. The tour after the photo shoot is very complete and includes the Botanical Garden, the Oscar Niemeyer Museum, Pope´s Woods, the Panoramic Tower, a lunch in Santa Felicidade, Tingui Park, Tanguá Park, Wire Opera House and Unilivre. The departure time is 9am and finishes at 6pm.

Did you like the idea? Do you want nice pictures in Curitiba as well?

Contact us to book your tour with photo shoot! Be sure that you will have great pictures of you and your trip to Curitiba.

Deluxe train tour in Curitiba

Deluxe train tour in Curitiba

The only deluxe train in Brazil takes its passengers to an amazing experience through the Serra do Mar mountain range. Great Brazil Express has only three cars: “Foz” – reminds of the Iguassu Falls (23 seats), “Copacabana” (23 seats) and the newste one, “Curitiba” (40 seats). The ambiance is very exclusive and the decoration reminds of the Golden times of the railways, when travelling used to be exclusive in the 1st class train cars. The train tour from Curitiba to Morretes in this category is unique, from the ambiance to the service.

trem-de-luxo-noturnoDeluxe train: an outstading experience from the begining to the end

Right after boarding, the staff will offer a glass of sparkling wine. They will also tell the history and curiosities about the railway and the region and will point out the most interesting places for those who want to take pictures or film. The staff speaks Portuguese and English.

The snacks on board fits perfectly the ambiance. Trays with a delicious cheese/ham croissant,  butter roll, butter, jelly, lemon pie and beverages round up the menu, that can vary without previous notice.

The train tour lasts a bit more than 4 hours and crosses the largest Atlantic Rain Forest preserved area in Brazil in a railway with more than 130 years of history. You will cross several tunnels and view points where you can see waterfalls and a river and other attractions pointed by the staff. If you are lucky, in the day you chose you might get off at one of them, the Cadeado Chapel, built in honor of the Mary Holy of Rocio, patroness of Paraná Estate. A 15-minutes stop close to the nature with great views!

After arriving in Morretes, the tour goes on. For lunch, try the typical “barreado”, almost mandatory for visitors in Morretes. This local specialty is a delicious beef stew served with cassava flour and bananas! The lunch also includes fish, spraws, rice, salad and much more. Morretes is also famous its history, for the banana candy, traditional “cachaça” – sugar cane spirit and beautiful and quiet landscapes around.

Wine tasting: learn, try and visit the Winery Araucaria

Wine tasting: learn, try and visit the Winery Araucaria

I must confess that good wines were not my specialty, but I knew that it was a matter of time to improve my taste. It would follow the same logic: as times goes by, we try different foods and are open for new things, don´t we? During a trip to Chile in 2014 I discovered myself as a wine lover!

Until then, wines were simply too dry for me! But after almost 20 days of vacation with Chilenean wines almost every day, I realized how savy and delicious they were. Back in Curitiba, I tried new wines and looked for information regarding wine production, types of grapes, differences, suggestions for harmonizations and so on. But some questions were still there: “do I really need to balance the glass before drinking?”, “how can I know more about a wine with only a sip?”, “what is the difference between grapes?” among other questions.

I looked for some courses, but I did not want to become a sommelier and the options were over my budget. So, in May 2015 Bibiana, director at Special Paraná, asked me to visit Vinícola Araucária, as it was our purpose to offer this tour option for tourists and locals and we test everything before! What an excellent experience it was! That day I took part at a Wine Day, offered by the winery with the sommelier Wagner Gabardo what was with the group from beginning to the end of the tour. And it was not a simple wine tasting – it was much more!

degustação-de-vinhos-vinícola-araucária (4)

At Wine Day, you will have an experience much more complete than a simple wine tasting! Photo: Caroline Kwasnicki

The road until we reached the winery was very beautiful, in the mountain region called Serra do Mar. The place has easy access, about one hour from Curitiba downtown. It is possible to see many Araucarias – our typical tree that also named the winery! The day was cold, very appropriate for a good wine but I do not doubt the visit is worth does not matter the weather!

The beautiful Winery Araucaria! Photo: Bibiana Antoniacomi

To start, the sommelier Wagner told us more about the winery, how the production works, information about the climate, height and the soil, among other curiosities and challenges of raising grapes in this area and the production of good wine. The vineyard began 2007 with the French grapes Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Viognier and aso the Italian grapes Nebbiolo and Teroldego.

The building of the winery began to be built 2008 with the clear goal to show that the region has conditions to produce quality wines – and you will be sure about it after tasting them! Many questions were answered, such as harvest, maturation and how many kilos of grapes are necessary for a bottle of wine. But I will not tell more, but you can be sure to ask many things during the Wine Day!!

degustação-de-vinhos-vinícola-araucária (1)

The sommelier Wagner Gabardo tells about the production at Vinícola Araucaria

In the winery, Wagner explained more about the production and the technolgy used. In one of the rooms, we saw the huge steel equipments where the fermentation takes place – it is very important to keep the temperatures controlled. In other moment, we understood more about the oak barrels used to age the wine and which conditons are necessary for the wine to age “well”. It is quite interesting to know more about it before the wine tasting. These information in advance help to understand and value better what you drink. After all the information, we were eager to taste everything!

And finally, the moment of the wine tasting has come! Wagner kept explaining and we received some handouts about how to analyse the wine completely: visual, smell and taste. We could take notes – I do reccommend to take notes or to use your cell phone for everything you find interesting to remember afterwards. During the lecture we learned a lot! We tested our taste, understood why I had the questions I mentioned in the begining of the text, what the “tears in the glass” mean, why should we smell the wine, what the salivation means and much more. And what about the taste memory? It will be completely different from person to person, depending on previous experiences the person had. What is quite interesting! During the wine tasting, there was a selection of delicious bread types on the table.

During the lecture we learned some techniques about wine tasting, very well harmonized with handmade bread. Photo: Caroline Kwasnicki

And the experience only gets better!! To end it, a delicious lunch harmonized with the local produced wines. The day I was there, the restaurant was not ready yet and e had a phantastic lunch at the main house. More recently the Restaurant Gralha Azul was opened: a rustic and cozy space. Bibiana went there to see how it is and was pleasantly surprised with the food and wines served. During Wine Day the lunch includes starter, main dish, dessert, water and 3 glasses of wine. Take a look at the options – they are delicious!

Gralha Azul Restaurant is a cozy and pleasant place with beautiful view to the lake. Photo: Vinícola Araucária

Bife Ancho – grilled and served with rice with mushrooms, potatoes and green pepper sauce – and galinha à Moda Araucária – chicken with white wine sauce, cooked cassava, chicken risotto and parmesan cheese – are some of the options found on the menu. Photo: Vinícola Araucária.

Before leaving, a short stop at the winery shop! We received a participation certificate and had time to take a look at the wines and choose the ones we wanted to take home. As we had already tasted all them, it was easy to find the ones we preferred. At the store you will find the sparkling wine Poty Brut, Poty Demi Sec, Angustifolia Cabernet Sauvignon, Angustifolia Merlot, Angustifolia Chardonnay and Gralha Azul Merlot. The bottles and labels are very elegant and remind of our region, as the artist Poty Lazzarotto, the gralha azul (bird) and araucária tree (angustifólia). It does not matter if you are from Curitiba or from anywhere else, it is a surely a good souvenir. The store also sells some gifts and accessories.

Take part at a Wine Day with winetasting

Yes, you can take part at a Wine Day at Vinícola Araucária. We tested and approved the program before and now it is your turn! Wine Day is available for groups between 6 and 20 persons from Tuesday to Sunday and you must schedule it in advance. Share this experience with your friends and put together a small group! I am sure that you will learn a lot. To know a bit more about wines will make you life easier when visiting a restaurant, choose a wine for dinner with friends or family or even to prepare a romantic evening.

Após a visitação, a aula com degustação e o almoço harmonizado, você terá um tempinho para olhar a loja da Vinícola Araucária e levar alguns vinhos para casa! Foto: Caroline Kwasnicki
